On November 3rd, Americans will elect a new Congress. Then the Trump administration could escalate the Iran war again, reports a senator.

Democratic US Senator Chris Murphy has the President’s military plans Donald Trump for an attack on the Iran criticized as “crazy” and “devastating”. Murphy, a member of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee, reported on Thursday that he had been briefed on the war strategy. He did not give any details, but warned of a “destruction of our rule of law” and an “escalating spiral of violence.”

“It will fail to achieve the objectives and trigger a new cycle of escalation,” Murphy wrote on X at a Middle East Institute event in Washington he said: “We were given a preview that it would be a short-term plan. All I’m saying is: your plan is crazy.”

US Senator warns of a new January 6th

Murphy was referring to reports that the Pentagon could target civilian infrastructure in Iran. “I don’t know whether they themselves believe that the plan will work. But in my opinion it will lead to an extension and escalation of this war – with devastating consequences for our security interests.”

The background is media reports that the US government has asked Gulf states to prepare for a short but highly intensive military operation after the election on November 3rd. According to the Wall Street Journal, Trump is considering it Israel targeted strikes against Iranian nuclear facilities and civilian infrastructure in order to force the leadership in Tehran to the negotiating table. Trump himself had declared that he would not launch any attacks before the election.

Murphy also warned of a possible repeat of the events of January 6, 2021, when Trump’s supporters stormed the US Capitol. In his last show before the election, satirist Jon Stewart speculated that Trump could provoke something similar if the Republicans were defeated.
