EU foreign policy chief: Russia not interested in peace

US negotiators are making a new attempt to negotiate an end to the Ukraine war. Kaja Kallas expects little given Moscow’s attitude, but at least sees one positive aspect.
Despite the new push by US mediators, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas has little hope of an early end to the Ukraine war. “We don’t see that Russia is really interested in peace,” said Kallas during a visit to Lithuania. Moscow didn’t make a single concession. Instead, the opposite is evident: “If they lose the initiative on the ground, they bomb civilians from the air,” Kallas said at a press conference in Vilnius.
The US negotiators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner had Moscow at the weekend and then for the first time Kyiv visited. However, they did not report any immediate progress after the trip. “I am pleased that the special envoys also visited Kiev for the first time. For the Ukrainians, this meant three days without bombing the civilian population. I think that is the positive side of this visit,” said Kallas.
Kremlin boss Vladimir Putin had announced a three-day pause in attacks on Kiev for the duration of the US negotiators’ visit Ukraine in return, refrained from attacking Moscow during this time.
