The USA considered Jordan to be a comparatively safe military location. Now the kingdom is itself at the center of the war with new Iranian attacks.

Jordan has increasingly become the focus of the war between the United States and Iran. Iranian forces have carried out four attacks on American troops in the kingdom in five days, the New York Times reported, citing several U.S. officials. Two US soldiers were killed in an attack on Friday and another is missing.

The responsible US central command Centcom confirmed the deaths on Saturday. The military said four other soldiers were taken to Jordanian hospitals and have since been released. Other members of the armed forces were treated for minor injuries and have returned to duty.

Several helicopters damaged

According to information from the New York Times, dozens of US soldiers were injured and several helicopters were damaged in the four attacks. The first attack hit a shelter at the King Faisal air base, injuring up to five US soldiers. Another attack hit a base in eastern Jordan from which American Blackhawk helicopters were deployed.

According to US officials quoted by the newspaper, the series of attacks indicates that the Iran continues to have extensive missile stocks. In addition, the Iranian armed forces are apparently increasingly successful in overcoming American air defenses. The government officials spoke on condition of anonymity.

Jordan has been a close ally for decades USA and an important base for their military operations in the Middle East. The kingdom is home to several major US air force bases. Before and in the first days of the war, the Pentagon also relocated soldiers from Bahrain, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates to supposedly safer locations in Jordan, according to the New York Times Israel. Jordan’s strategic importance continued to increase as other US partners in the region restricted the deployment of American troops and the use of their airspace.

During previous Iranian attacks on Israel, Jordanian air defenses had intercepted missiles and drones that crossed the kingdom’s airspace.
