The first passages through the Strait of Hormuz had barely begun again when a ship was attacked off Oman. Did it try to bypass routes set by Iran? Tehran seems angry.
The Iran After an attack on a ship off the coast of Oman, has reiterated that transits through the Strait of Hormuz are only safe on routes determined by Tehran. Other routes are not covered by the guarantee of safe passage, the Iranian authority responsible for the Persian Gulf, PGSA, said on
The World Shipping Organization (IMO) had previously temporarily stopped the recently started evacuation of ships around the strait, which is important for global trade in oil, gas and fertilizer. “Today I received a report of an attack in the Gulf of Oman on a ship transiting the Strait of Hormuz,” said IMO Secretary General Arsenio Dominguez. “This ship was not in transit as part of the IMO evacuation plan.”
Iran’s Revolutionary Guards warn
According to information from US media, it was a cargo ship flying the Singapore flag. The Iranian Revolutionary Guards – the Islamic Republic’s elite military force – attacked it, it said, citing US officials. The Washington Post quotes an official as saying that the ship was hit by an Iranian drone.
The Revolutionary Guards had already announced on Thursday morning that passage through the strait was only safe on Iranian-determined routes. In the evening, the responsible authority PGSA followed up on X and pointed out that the use of other routes “does not entitle you to insurance cover or associated liability claims”.
Opening the Strait of Hormuz to shipping is a central part of the recently agreed framework agreement between the USA and Iran.
