50 attacks within 24 hours, deaths in new air strikes – the so-called ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah is barely holding. What is the USA demanding so that calm can be restored?
According to Lebanese sources, five people have been killed in new Israeli air strikes in southern Lebanon. A drone attacked a car that was traveling near the town of Nabatieh, the Lebanese news agency NNA reported. Two inmates were killed. Three more people were killed in an attack on a house in Iklim al-Tuffah early this morning. The place is considered a stronghold of the pro-Iranian Hezbollah militia, which is hostile to Israel.
The Israeli army said in a post on Platform X that there had been around 50 attacks in southern Lebanon within 24 hours. The military continues to destroy “terror infrastructure” in the northern neighboring country and kill terrorists there, the post said. These include buildings that members of the Lebanese Hezbollah militia used to attack soldiers. In southern Lebanon, Israeli soldiers were attacked by Hezbollah with several rockets. There are also repeated drone attacks by Hezbollah on places in northern Israel.
Officially, there is a ceasefire in the war between Hezbollah and Israel. In fact, attacks from both sides occur every day. Since the beginning of March, there has been another serious escalation between Hezbollah and the Israeli military as a result of the Iran war. After new rocket fire from Lebanon, Israel responded with air strikes and a ground offensive in southern Lebanon. There were also fierce fighting in the border area.
According to Lebanese figures, more than 2,600 people have been killed and more than a million displaced since the beginning of March. Lebanon itself is not officially a party to the conflict.
In view of the fragile ceasefire, the USA is pushing for direct talks between Israel and Lebanon at the highest level. US President Donald Trump announced the ceasefire in mid-April after talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Lebanese President Joseph Aoun.
