A total of 104.1 billion cubic meters of gas were transported in 5 years through the TurkStream Natural Gas Pipeline, which transports natural gas reserves in Russia to Turkey and via Türkiye to Europe.

According to the information obtained by the AA correspondent, approximately 44.4 billion cubic meters of gas flowed to Turkey and 59.8 billion cubic meters to Europe between January 1, 2020 and December 31, 2024 through the TurkStream Natural Gas Pipeline. Thus, a total of 104.1 billion cubic meters of gas was delivered to Türkiye and Europe through the pipeline in the said period.

After the closure of the Nord Stream 1, Nord Stream 2 and Yamal-Europe pipelines, which provide natural gas from Russia to Europe, and the suspension of gas shipments from Ukraine, the importance of TurkStream is increasing as the only transit route that can deliver gas to Europe.

Following recent developments, experts are discussing the adequacy of TurkStream’s capacity to meet Europe’s natural gas needs and the possibility of increasing the capacity of the line.

TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS OF TURKAKIM PROJECT

The signatures for the project, which was first announced during Russian President Vladimir Putin’s official visit to Turkey in December 2014, were signed by the then Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Berat Albayrak and the Russian Minister of Energy Aleksandr Novak on October 10, 2016.

TurkStream, consisting of two 930-kilometer-long sea lines stretching from Russia’s Anapa city to Kıyıköy on Turkey’s Thrace coast and two separate land lines of 142 and 70 kilometers in length, was made ready for gas flow as of December 31, 2019.

The official opening of the line was made by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Russian President Vladimir Putin on January 8, 2020.

The first line of TurkStream, which has a total gas transportation capacity of 31.50 billion cubic meters, 15.75 billion cubic meters in each of its two lines, provides gas flow to Turkey. Gas is transferred to Europe through the second line of 142 kilometers and 48 inches, which is built by TürkAkım Gaz Taşıma AŞ, which was established as an equal partnership of Petroleum Pipelines (BOTAŞ) and Gazprom, and extends from Kıyıköy to Bulgaria.

In the written statement made by Gazprom’s subsidiary, Gazprom Export, on January 6, 2022, it was reported that a 4-year natural gas purchase agreement was signed between Gazprom Export and BOTAŞ to be transported through the TurkStream pipeline.
