Will Marmara anxious waiting turn into a waste pool?

With the warming of the weather, the concern of MÜSİLAJ began for the Sea of Marmara. Occasionally, the formation of mushale that manifests itself in small phrases on the shores, warns that the experts may increase in June, this threat can only be prevented by reducing the burden of pollution. The mushale, which goes down to 25 meters below the sea and creates images similar to the spider network, has destructive effects not only on the surface but also in the sea ecosystem. Usually the surface in the spring and yellow-brown layers, which manifests itself in the mucillaj, gathered through boats and withdraws with sewage. However, experts say that this intervention is only a superficial and temporary solution.

Prof. Dr. Yellow underlines that the only way to protect the Sea of Marmara from the mucs and larger environmental disasters is to permanently reduce the pollution burden in the region.

Thousands of tons of pollution

According to experts, it is not possible to change climate change or the natural structure of the sea in order to prevent the mucilla in the Marmara Sea. Therefore, the only factor that can be controlled is to reduce the burden of pollution. However, in the current situation, the picture around Marmara is worrying. Only 50 percent of domestic wastes, 30 percent of industrial wastes are treated, while agricultural wastes are almost never purified. This shows that thousands of tons of pollutants reach the sea every day. However, despite all the warnings, harmful applications such as misuse of the shores, excessive fishing, mud castings and wastes caused by maritime activities continue.

Nilüfer needs a solution

Another issue that has come to the agenda of the public in recent days is the transport of Nilüfer Stream in Bursa to the Marmara Sea with pipes. Nilüfer Stream, which is intensively polluted by industrial wastes, has first class water quality at the entrance to Bursa, while the fourth class becomes very contaminated water at the point where it is poured into Marmara. Suggestions for the closing or changing the direction of the tea are ecologically dangerous by experts.

Pollution load should be reduced

Dean of Bandırma Onyedi Eylül University Maritime Faculty Dr. Mustafa Sarı criticized this approach with harsh words, “You carry another ecosystem instead of preventing pollution in the source. This approach is an open environmental error. The main need to be done; the strict control of waste resources is the operation of the treatment plants and the prevention of leakage discharge.”

No progress

Prof. Dr. Yellow, in 2021 with great hopes started with the Marmara Sea Action Plan, “the governors of 7 provinces, mayors and relevant ministries were put into force. Within the scope of the plan within three years, all wastewater treatment plants were aimed to be increased to the level of“ advanced biological treatment ”level. However, according to the data released at the Coordination Board meeting in the middle of 2024, progress in this target is only 0.7 percent. This clearly demonstrates that the plan has failed in practice and that Marmara’s pollution burden cannot be reduced. ”

It is underlined that the actual risk is experienced in the part of the water up to 25 meters deep.

The most severe penalty should be given

Prof. Dr. Meriç Colonel (Istanbul University Faculty of Water Sciences Faculty Member)

“The Sea of Marmara has been polluted with domestic and industrial wastes for 50 years. If an emergency measures are not taken, the images in 2021 will be inevitable. Industrial facilities should be inspected. The most severe criminal sanctions should be applied to those who pollute the environment. “

It becomes worse

Dr. EROL KESİCİ (Türkiye Protection of Nature)

“Bottom screening in the Sea of Marmara should be treated completely. If the necessary measures are not taken, we will see a worse picture than 2021 after April. In the Aegean Sea, even more grave, mucilage phrases began to form. “
