Israel’s government has long been accused of having no concept of who should govern the Gaza Strip after the war. The outgoing US government now apparently wants to present such a plan.
According to a media report, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken will today present a plan for the reconstruction and administration of the Gaza Strip after the end of the war. As the US news site Axios reported, citing three US officials, Blinken wants to present the plan in a speech at the US think tank Atlantic Council in Washington. On the same day, talks on a gradual end to the war are to continue in Qatar’s capital Doha.
According to reports, a temporary ceasefire in the Gaza war and the release of hostages is within reach. US President-elect Donald Trump told US television channel “Newsmax” on Monday evening that Israel and the Islamist Hamas were “very close” to an agreement. “I heard there was a handshake and that they’re getting it done – maybe by the end of the week,” Trump said. Trump’s statements were not found on the Newsmax website. His envoy Steve Witkoff is taking part in the negotiations in Doha. In a second phase of the planned agreement, an end to the Gaza war will be negotiated.
According to Axios, Blinken’s plan envisages a government mechanism with the participation of the international community and Arab countries. They could also send troops to Gaza to stabilize the security situation and provide humanitarian aid, it said. In addition, the Palestinian Authority (PA), which governs the West Bank and is led by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, must be involved in a future government. According to the will of the USA, the PA should be reformed beforehand.
The Israeli government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is therefore prepared to grant the Arab countries a role in the Gaza Strip after the war. However, Netanyahu has so far refused to agree to a plan that would involve the Palestinian Authority. Hamas, which effectively triggered the Gaza war with its terrorist attack on Israel more than 15 months ago, forcibly expelled the PA from Gaza in 2007.
