With the decision taken in August, US courts found that Google had created an illegal monopoly in the internet search market. 90 percent of internet searches in the USA are made through Google.
The US Department of Justice has several options to disrupt Google’s search monopoly. These options may change the methods of accessing information on the Internet, as well as reduce the revenues of Google, the world’s fourth most valuable company, and relieve its competitors.
In the statement made by the Ministry, it was said, “In order to fully compensate for the damages incurred, Google’s current dominance over the distribution network must be terminated, as well as its future dominance over the distribution network must be prevented.”
The ministry may request the court to block payments made by Google to pre-install its search engine on new devices or to use it as the default search engine.
Google paid $26.3 billion to Apple and other device manufacturers in 2021 to keep its market share high and ensure that the search engine remains the default on smartphones and browsers.
Google, which plans to appeal, stated in its blog post that these proposals are “radical” and “go far beyond the legal issues that are the subject of the case.”
