The US government is hard against foreigners-despite the right to stay. A democrat sees Nazi methods in it.

With a reference to the Gestapo, the democratic MP Stephen F. Lynch sharply criticized the arrest of the tufts student Rumeysa Ozturk. In a contribution on the platform X, he spoke of a “disgusting memory of the gestapo-like behavior from another time”. The reason for his criticism was the arrest of the Turkish doctoral student, who studied with a valid visa at Tufts University in Massachusetts. Lynch accused the authorities that Ozturk was “kidnapped by the street” and “without hearing” was brought to a detention center from the ICE immigration authority.

According to the agreed media reports, the arrest occurred on the open street in Somerville near Boston. Ozturk led civil servants of the US Ministry of Homeland Protection, who were masked and did not want to identify themselves according to eyewitnesses at first and did not want to identify themselves at first. A surveillance video of the incident quickly spread on social networks and attracted nationwide attention. A few hours later, the student was transferred to a deportation center of the US immigration authority ICE in Texas.

The authorities accuse Ozturk that it has developed activities to support Hamas. So far, they have not put any evidence of these allegations open. Rather, several reports point out that the student had only contributed to an article in the student university newspaper, which critically dealt with the relationships between Tufts University with Israel. For Lynch, the case is symptomatic: “We must not allow the exercise of freedom of expression to be answered with a arrest – especially not on campus.”

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio was behind the security authorities’ approach. Rubio said the United States had the right to withdraw visas if foreigners donated unrest. He said, “We don’t want that in our country. Go back and do it in your country.” Rubio did not establish a direct connection to Oztur’s case, but basically commented on the tightening of the entry policy.

Increasing criticism also came from university representatives and civil society organizations. Tufts President Sunil Kumar said that there was serious concerns in the face of arresting and seeing the university’s duty to protect the rights of its international students. Pen America, an organization to defend freedom of expression, described the process as “blatant disregard for the principles of freedom of expression and the free press within the first constitutional addition”.

Meanwhile, Lynch is fighting for information about the legal and operational background of the arrest. He announced that he is committed to Oztur’s return to Massachusetts and supported a political reappraisal in the congress.
