Explosions can be heard in Iran. The US Army has attacked targets in the south of the country. All developments in the news blog.
US Secretary of State: Talks with Iran are still ongoing
According to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, negotiations with Iran on an initial agreement could drag on for a while. There are currently discussions in Qatar about the exact wording, which could take a few days, he says. Regarding the recent US attacks in Iran, Rubio says that the sea lanes must remain free. “The straits have to be open, they will be open one way or another,” Rubio said.
Despite his country’s recent attacks on Iran, Rubio believes an agreement with Tehran to end the war is still possible. During a visit to India on Tuesday, Rubio referred to negotiations planned for later in the day in Qatar. “We’ll see if there’s any progress.”
Regarding a possible agreement with Tehran and the planned negotiations in Qatar, Rubio told journalists: “There is a lot of back and forth regarding certain wording (…), so it will probably take a few more days.” US President Donald Trump “expressed the desire to reach an agreement,” Rubio added in Jaipur. “He will either get a good deal – or no deal at all.”
US attacks targets in southern Iran
Despite the ceasefire, the US military attacked missile positions in southern Iran and attacked boats in the Strait of Hormuz area that were attempting to lay mines in the strait. The “attacks in self-defense” served to protect the troops from threats from the Iranian military, said a spokesman for the responsible regional command for the Middle East (Centcom). The US military is exercising restraint within the framework of the current ceasefire, but is defending its own units.
Iranian media reported that there were several deaths after a US attack in the area of Larak island in the Strait of Hormuz. The US military initially did not provide any information about possible victims and did not provide any further details about the attacks on the Iranian targets.
Trump: Iran’s enriched uranium will be destroyed
According to US President Donald Trump, the uranium that has already been enriched in Iran should be destroyed in the USA or elsewhere. Either it will be handed over “immediately” to the United States to be brought to the United States and destroyed there, or destroyed locally or elsewhere in cooperation and coordination with Iran, the Republican wrote on the Truth Social platform. The process should be monitored by nuclear energy experts, said Trump – and referred to the “Atomic Energy Commission”. It was initially unclear whether he meant a US authority or possibly the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), based in Vienna.
