It has been known for the past few weeks that the USA is moving military forces to the Middle East in view of tensions with Iran. Now there is an update.

The aircraft carrier “USS Abraham Lincoln” has arrived in the area of responsibility of the US military’s Centcom regional command, which covers the Middle East including Iran. The aircraft carrier strike group is currently deployed in the Middle East “to promote regional security and stability,” Centcom said on Platform X. On Monday the aircraft carrier was traveling in the Indian Ocean. There was no further information about the location.

US President Donald Trump recently did not rule out military intervention by his country in Iran. “We have a huge fleet heading in this direction,” the Republican told reporters a few days ago. “And maybe we don’t have to use them, we’ll see,” he added. Many ships are on their way to the region just in case. “I would prefer that nothing happens, but we are watching them very closely,” Trump said of Iran.

A reaction from Iran followed promptly. “The armed forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran are monitoring the enemy’s movements,” a senior military official in the central operations command told state radio. The presence of “foreign forces” in the maritime environment turns them into “easily achievable targets,” it said.

The Foreign Ministry in Tehran warned of the regional consequences of an escalation. “Insecurity is contagious and therefore there is a common concern among the countries in the region,” said Foreign Ministry spokesman Ismail Baghai. “We will respond stronger than ever to any form of aggression against Iran with a comprehensive and painful response.”

US media had previously reported that the aircraft carrier “USS Abraham Lincoln” and accompanying ships were on their way from the South China Sea to the region. The aircraft carrier, powered by a nuclear reactor, normally carries several thousand soldiers and dozens of fighter jets and is accompanied by Navy destroyers.

Protests in Iran at the end of December were initially triggered by an economic crisis. However, the demonstrations quickly developed into political uprisings against the authoritarian system of rule of the Islamic Republic. The security apparatus cracked down brutally on the protests and suppressed them. Thousands of protesters were killed. Trump responded to this with repeated threats – which fueled fears of military escalation in the region.
