The US government is demanding sensitive data about Minnesotans. Apparently to curb the violence. Democrats are outraged.

After the brutal killing of 37-year-old nurse Alex Pretti by US immigration authorities ICE on Saturday, Democrats and Trump administration officials are blaming each other. In a wave of nationwide mass protests, people expressed solidarity with Pretti and other victims of the ICE authority.

Leading representatives of the Democratic Party as well as former Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton also got involved: the latter warned of a historic moment, Obama called on the population to oppose the repression of the Trump administration.

The government is now pursuing a different course. Although Trump announced in a telephone interview with the Washington Post on Sunday that he wanted to investigate the fatal incident, he also praised the work of the ICE agents in the highest tones. Other government officials struck a similar tone.

It is repeatedly emphasized that the ICE agents are patriots who protect the country. The two victims, Alex Pretti and Renée Nicole Good, were described as “domestic terrorists” – a claim for which there is currently no evidence, but which has not been retracted.

On the Democratic side, the demands are clear: a withdrawal of ICE officers from the cities and an independent and transparent investigation of all cases of excessive force. US Attorney General Pam Bondi has now responded to the former with a cynical offer.

In a three-page letter that she sent to Minnesota Governor Tim Walz on Saturday, Bondi addressed the situation on site. She uses the first two pages to blame democratic representatives for the escalation of violence. It is the rhetoric of individual Democrats that is responsible for the alleged increase in violence against ICE agents by 1,300 percent. The “lawlessness on the streets” is only surpassed by the “unprecedented financial fraud” of those responsible in Minnesota, the letter says.

In order to put an end to the violence, the US Attorney General is demanding that the state of Minnesota stop resisting ICE operations and end all programs to protect migrants. In addition, it calls for the release of highly sensitive data – including information about Medicaid health insurance, but especially the state’s complete voter data.
