Processor plans for the Galaxy S27 Ultra, which Samsung will introduce next year, may change. While it was claimed that the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 reached high temperatures in the tests and lost performance under long-term load, it turned out that Samsung was re-evaluating the Exynos 2700 option.
According to a report shared by SEDaily, Samsung’s smartphone department conducted internal performance validation tests for the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 processor, which is targeted for use in the Galaxy S27 Ultra model. Test results showed that changes could be made to the processors.
HEATING PROBLEM CANNOT BE SOLVED
Due to the heating problem, the Exynos 2700 processor can be used instead of the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6.
During these internal tests, it was determined that the processor exceeded the specified temperature thresholds in tasks that were constantly run under high load and experienced performance restrictions due to heating. When a high processing load is imposed on smartphones, overheating of components may cause the frequency to be reduced in order to prevent damage to the hardware.
Samsung conveyed these heating concerns to Qualcomm last month and gave a grace period until mid-October to meet thermal, stability and performance standards before finalizing the final processor selection. If Qualcomm could not achieve the expected performance and stability level during this period, the South Korean technology giant is ready to use the Exynos 2700 chip it developed in-house in the Galaxy S27 Ultra model.
Mass production of the Galaxy S27 series is planned to start at the end of the year. Samsung needs to make its decision on the processor in a short time in order to be able to catch up with the launch, which is traditionally held in February or March. It is not yet clear whether the company will completely abandon Snapdragon and use only Exynos 2700 in the Galaxy S27 Ultra.
Another possibility is to use different processors regionally. Accordingly, the Galaxy S27 Ultra with Snapdragon processor may be on sale in some markets and the Exynos processor may be on sale in others. Samsung last introduced the Ultra model with the Exynos processor in 2021 in South Korea and in 2022 in the global market. The return of the Exynos 2700 to the flagship Ultra model could also be an important development for Samsung’s chip-designing LSI division. However, the final decision depends on the possibility of Samsung fixing the heating problem in Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6.
