Wildberries responds to drone attacks – with an unusual step

Ukrainian drones have been hitting Wildberries warehouses for days. Military articles are now disappearing from a search category – but they are not completely gone.
Russia’s largest online retailer Wildberries has apparently started removing military-related products from certain search results. According to consistent reports from various media outlets, the company is responding to a series of Ukrainian attacks on its warehouses. The step primarily affects search terms with a direct reference to the Russian war of aggression against the Russians Ukraine.
According to the Moscow exile newspaper “The Moscow Times”, anyone who searches on the website or app for “Everything for the SWO”, the Russian abbreviation for the so-called “military special operation” in Ukraine, will now receive a message that no suitable products could be found. Previously, the same search returned more than 200,000 hits. The observation is confirmed by, among others, the Ukrainian newspaper “Ukrainskaya Pravda” and the portal “Mesha”.
War goods are only hidden on the website
However, the goods have not completely disappeared from the range. The media unanimously report that protective vests and helmets can still be found, but have been sorted into other categories such as sports. According to the portal “Vot Tak”, related search terms such as “goods for the SWO” still return military first aid kits, backpacks, radios and badges. Wildberries offers a range of dual-use goods on its platform that can also be used for military purposes – including body armor and fiber optic cables for drones. The AP news agency found such articles in its own check, some with labels such as “tested in the SWO”.

The background to the alleged re-sorting is a series of attacks: According to the Kyiv Independent, at least seven Wildberries warehouses have been hit since July 18th, and according to other counts up to ten. Locations affected included Saint Petersburg, Tver, the area Moscow and Voronezh as well as on the of Russia occupied Crimea. The Ukrainian leadership said the logistics centers were targeted to disrupt the Russian army’s supplies. Media analysts estimate the damage at at least 100 billion rubles, the equivalent of around 1.2 billion US dollars.
Wildberries is considered a central player in the Russian consumer economy and is often linked to the US group Amazon compared. The “Kyiv Independent” puts the company’s share of Russian online retail at almost 50 percent; There is no independent confirmation of this number. The group’s banking division was sanctioned by the EU in July – based on its contribution to the Russian state budget.
