Ukraine is systematically trying to eliminate the Russian oil industry. The latest attack hits the facility of a company that the USA has just imposed sanctions on.
A Ukrainian drone strike hit a large oil refinery in Ryazan, Russia, causing a fire. Officially, Governor Pavel Malkov announced that 14 drones were intercepted over the Ryazan region. “There was a fire on the premises of an industrial plant due to falling debris,” he wrote on Telegram.
He reminded that it is forbidden to publish photos and videos from the scene of the incident. Nevertheless, unverified videos circulated on social media that appeared to show a large fire at the refinery.
The facility in Ryazan belongs to the oil company Rosneft, which the USA imposed sanctions on Wednesday – as well as the Russian oil company Lukoil. A large portion of Russian oil exports go through the country’s two largest oil companies and they generate an important share of Moscow’s tax revenue. The US wants to use sanctions to make it more difficult to finance the Russian war machine against Ukraine.
In its defensive battle in recent months, Ukraine has systematically targeted Russian refineries and oil pipelines. This is intended to slow down the supply of fuel for the Russian army and bring Moscow into economic difficulties.
