Kamala Harris’ husband, Doug Emhoff, is in the spotlight. It’s about a brief love affair.
Doug Emhoff, husband of US Vice President Kamala Harris, has admitted to having an affair that took place many years ago during his first marriage. He confirmed reports from a British tabloid to CNN.
“There were difficult times during my first marriage to Kerstin because of my behavior. I took responsibility and in the years that followed we worked on it as a family and ultimately came out stronger,” Emhoff told CNN.
According to reports in the Daily Mail, Emhoff had a relationship with one of his daughter’s nanny, which led to the failure of his first marriage. The woman also taught the girls at a private school. The details of this relationship were apparently known internally to US President Joe Biden’s selection committee, which chose Harris as the vice presidential candidate. According to the report, Emhoff informed Harris about this matter long before their wedding. The affair ended years before Emhoff and Harris entered into a relationship.
Brian Fallon, a spokesman for the Harris campaign, declined to comment on the issue. However, Emhoff’s first wife, Kerstin, said: “Doug and I decided to end our marriage many years ago for a variety of reasons. He is a great father to our children, remains a good friend to me, and I am truly proud of the warm and supportive blended family that Doug, Kamala and I have built together.”
Kerstin Emhoff has repeatedly spoken positively about Harris as her children’s stepmother in the past. Emhoff’s first marriage ended in 2009. Five years later, he married Harris. Today, he plays an important advisory role for his wife. Even before Biden dropped out of the race, Emhoff had actively supported Kamala Harris’s election campaign. This has increased even further in the two weeks since Biden’s withdrawal.
In conservative and Christian circles in the USA, missteps in marriage play a bigger role than in Europe. Republican Donald Trump has been divorced several times and is said to have had affairs. Former President Franklin D. Roosevelt had to defend himself against accusations of a homosexual relationship in the 1920s. Democrat Bill Clinton even had to face impeachment proceedings because of an affair with an intern.
