Not all family members support Donald Trump: His niece Mary warns against a victory and does not believe that he wants to unite America.
His family played a big role for Donald Trump at the Republican nomination convention on Friday. Sons, daughter and grandchildren sat in white leather seats in the box in front of the stage, facing the camera. Even his wife Melania, who is otherwise rarely seen during the election campaign, came and stood next to him after his speech. But the Trump family’s world is not entirely perfect. Niece Mary, a psychologist and critic of the presidential candidate, warned in a post on Substack against the desire for unity that Trump so vowed.
The values of unity and confidence were the pillars of Trump’s nomination speech: “In four months we will begin the four greatest years for our country. The division of our society must end, we will all rise together or we will fall together. I am running for president for all Americans, because there can be no victory for an America divided.”
His niece does not believe this and still sees him as a “terrible and violent person”. The 59-year-old argues that the people the former president surrounds himself with make it clear that he could not be further away from bringing the country together. As an example, she cited the head of the UFC martial arts series, Dana White, who had used strong words to announce Trump’s appearance at the congress. He had been in the headlines in 2023 for hitting his wife in a club. The wrestler Hulk Hogan, who heated things up at the congress, and the signs from Trump supporters reading “Mass deportation now!” are hardly signs of reconciliation.
“It’s been a deeply disturbing week because it’s a foretaste of what’s to come if Donald and the Republicans win.” These “deplorable, anti-American fascists” will be given an open invitation to infiltrate and then destroy the government, she continued.
Mary Trump is the daughter of Donald Trump’s brother Fred Jr. He was a pilot and fell out of favor with his father Fred Trump Sr. The younger Donald therefore inherited the family fortune. His brother Fred became an alcoholic and died of a heart attack in 1981. His daughter Mary is a Democrat and is considered a sharp critic of Donald Trump.
