Trump speaks to the central bank with candidates. His tariffs for the EU come into force today. All developments in the news blog.
The deadline for the introduction of the new US tariffs to many imports from the EU has expired. The trade measures ordered by Donald Trump should come into force at midnight (local time Washington; 6 a.m. German time), as the US President confirmed on his Truth Social platform a few minutes earlier. The European Commission, on the other hand, has previously assumed that the new duty rate of 15 percent on the import of most EU products into the United States will only apply from tomorrow.
In addition to the EU, almost 70 states are affected by the changed customs sets, each with different heights. Trump justifies his radical customs policy with alleged trade deficits that were a national security risk for the United States – that’s why there is a national emergency that justifies the tariff. His approach is also legally controversial.
A few minutes before midnight, Trump announced Truth Social that the tariffs would now come into force. “There will be billions of dollars into the USA, mostly from countries that have been exploited and laughed at the United States for many years,” he wrote in capital letters.
According to a media report, the federal judiciary is apparently affected by a far -reaching cyber attack. As the US news portal Politico reported late Wednesday evening (local time), citing two people familiar with the incident, the electronic case deposit system was compromised by a widespread cyber attack. Sensitive court data may have been disclosed, said Politico. The affected system is used by lawyers to upload and manage case documents and also includes an area in which the public receives access to some data for a fee. The judicial administration of the United States, the FBI and the authority for cyber security and infrastructure (CISA) have so far not responded to inquiries after a statement.
US President Donald Trump has confirmed his intention of putting Washington under the control of his government, and justifying this with an allegedly high crime in the capital. “We are thinking about it, yes, because crime is incredible,” Trump replied on Wednesday (local time) to the question of a journalist, whether the White House is planning to take control of the city’s institutions, especially the police.
“We want a great capital that is safe and we will get it,” added Trump. The US President referred to a high crime rate, attacks and murders and explained that his government should “perhaps quickly” use the National Guard in the capital – as it had previously happened in California.
