The governor of Minnesota could reach an important group of Democrats who the Republicans are also trying to reach: the black population. The 60-year-old was in office when George Floyd was killed in Minneapolis and the “Black Lives Matter” protests later broke out. But his political opponent could use that against him and accuse him of not doing enough to combat crime.
Democratic circles are apparently trying to avoid a long search for a Biden successor. Harris’ candidacy is not yet a foregone conclusion. “If you think there is a consensus among the people who want Joe Biden to go, that they support Vice President Harris, then you are mistaken,” said Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to Politico. “I am in these meetings, I see what they say in conversations. Many of them are not interested in removing the president. They are interested in removing the entire team.”
However, Harris’ advantage is that she is better known in the US than the governors and her poll results so far have given her at least some reason for hope. A poll from early July even put her ahead of Trump, albeit narrowly by 42 to 41 percent. But that could have changed after the assassination attempt on Trump.
