Federal Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul believes it is possible that he will travel to Greenland in the near future. Greenland belongs to the Kingdom of Denmark, said the CDU politician on Deutschlandfunk before a trip to Lithuania. “So that is undisputed in Europe and our European solidarity on this issue is also completely clear,” he added in response to a question about US claims on Greenland. The security situation in the Arctic region certainly needs to be discussed in NATO.

US President Donald Trump correctly pointed out that there was increased Chinese and Russian interest in this region. “This affects our security interests.” The Foreign Minister says they are ready to talk to the USA about these questions. “But of course that leaves questions of the territorial integrity of Greenland and Denmark completely untouched,” emphasizes Wadephul. “It’s quite possible that I’ll be in Greenland soon.” Trump reaffirmed the US claim to Greenland on Sunday. He made the comments in a telephone interview with The Atlantic magazine in connection with the US intervention in Venezuela.

Following the arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, Donald Trump does not currently see new elections in the South American country as a priority. “We will have elections at the right time, but the most important thing is that they solve the problem. The country is broken,” Trump told the press. “We have to revive it, and for that we need major investments from the oil companies to make the infrastructure functional again,” said the US president.

Asked by reporters whether the U.S. will require Venezuela’s acting president, Delcy Rodríguez, to allow opposition figures to return or release political prisoners, Trump said: “We’re not there yet. Right now we want to get the oil industry going again, rebuild the country, get it back on its feet and then hold elections.” The USA attacked targets in Venezuela on Saturday night, arrested Maduro and took him out of the country.
