Donald Trump claims to have asked Putin for protection for Ukrainian soldiers. Meanwhile, discussions about a 30-day ceasefire continue.
Is there a 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine? Ukraine has agreed to a corresponding US proposal-however, Russian President Vladimir Putin has linked his promise to conditions. Now US President Donald Trump has publicly commented on alleged negotiations between him and the Russian president.
Trump Putin wants to ask for mild for allegedly wrapped Ukrainian soldiers. “Exactly at this moment, thousands of Ukrainian soldiers are circled by the Russian military and are in a very bad and vulnerable situation,” Trump wrote on his social network Truth Social. “I asked President Putin to spare her life.” Should Putin not stick to it, threaten a “terrible massacre that has not been seen since World War II”. Trump did not explain where this massacre threatens. Putin had recently mentioned terrain gain in the Russian area of Kursk.
In addition, Trump spoke of “very good and productive discussions” with Putin. “There is a good chance that this terrible, bloody war will soon end.” He left open whether Trump had this conversation personally or through his special envoy Steve Witkoff, who is currently in Moscow.
On Thursday, Witkoff presented the US proposal of a 30-day ceasefire in Moscow, which Ukraine approved on Tuesday during talks in Saudi Arabia. He also spoke to Putin in Moscow. The Kremlin then expressed itself “carefully optimistically”.
Putin had declared the plan that Russia basically supported the fights. However, a ceasefire must “lead to permanent peace and tackle the deeper causes of this crisis”.
