The message of the US President to Iran: double-edged. On the one hand, he offers conversations, talks about a possible deal. On the other hand, he threatens sanctions and no less than an extension.

US President Donald Trump has contacted Iran with a message of willingness to talk and at the same time. The Republican brought a possible direct exchange with the Iranian leadership. When asked whether he would personally speak to his Iranian counterpart, Trump said in the White House in Washington: “I would.”

It didn’t matter whether he would take the first step or the Iranian side. It is important to talk to each other. “We will see whether we can reconcile or work out a deal with Iran,” said Trump.

He is primarily concerned with preventing Iran in possession of nuclear weapons. “We don’t want to be tough towards Iran. We don’t want to be hard against anyone. But they just can’t have nuclear weapons,” he emphasized.

The United States and Iran do not maintain any diplomatic relationships – Trump’s conversation with the Iranian President Massoud Peseschkian would therefore be extremely unusual.

At the same time, the Republican ordered a new pressure campaign against Iran and directed hard threats to Tehran. He announced that his government would put “maximum pressure” on Iran. Further funds – among other things sanctions – should be checked. These should prevent the country from promoting its nuclear program and supporting terrorist groups in other countries.

Trump did not rule out the sale of Iranian oil. Trump said he was not happy to order these things and hope that the steps would not really be used, but that the problems could be solved differently.

At the same time, he threatened Iran with a “total annihilation” if the country planned an act of revenge and an assassination attempt should be done. When asked by reporters, Trump said: “It would be terrible if they did that, not because of me. If they were doing it, they would be wiped out. That would be the end.” Trump pushed after: “I left instructions. If you do it, you will be wiped out. There will be nothing left.”

In the presidential election campaign, Trump’s team announced that the Republican had been informed by the US secret service – “about real and concrete threats from Iran to murder him”. In 2020, the US military had killed the Iranian General Ghassem Soleimani on Trump’s instruction.

Iranian leadership sees the USA as an arch enemy. The US government has long been tracting Iran with far-reaching sanctions.
