The scandal in the White House continues to echo. Europe can and must not accept that anymore, says Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann (FDP) in a guest post.

What happened in the White House yesterday was a show that is as unsavory as planned on the US side. It was obviously the goal of Trump and his Compagnon Vance from the start to expose Selenskyj to blame him for failure in front of his voters.

We were able to prepare that we would reach extremely unpleasant news from the United States every day, but another chapter was opened today. A completely unpredictable US President who makes the Ukrainian victims of brutal Russian violence no longer speaks for the freedom, value-released western world.

While Russia continues its criminal aggression, we are experiencing a perpetrator-victim in the White House: not a word that Russia travels human rights. Not a word about the atrocities that happen every day in Ukraine. Instead, Selenskyj is shown before the world press. A scandal.

Europe can and must not accept that – nor the affront to our high representative Kaja Kallas, who has traveled to the United States to exchange ideas with the American Foreign Minister. As soon as she had landed there, the appointment was canceled.

Ukraine needs our support without a break – militarily, humanitarian, economical and strategic. We have the means to supply Ukraine with weapons that are needed and we have the economic instruments to help in the long term. After concluding a contract/agreement between Ukraine and the EU, the European investment bank could lay on bonds for the “reduction of rare earth” that could be drawn by European countries, companies and also private individuals. In this way, billions of euros can be generated, who benefit from Ukraine for the reconstruction.

Europe has to make itself more independent of the United States and start their own initiatives – immediately. As a transatlantic, I don’t say that lightly, but it is time to set off. Not sling is the order of the day, but clear announcements that deeds have to follow.
