World Weather Attribution (WWA), the climate organization formed by scientists from all over the world, announced its expected report for the year 2024. While the report stated that 2024 will be the hottest year on record, it was emphasized that the number of extremely hot days increased by 41 days. While it is estimated that this situation, which has negative signs for the future, may continue to increase in 2025, the organization announced its ‘very urgent’ action plans. Here are the striking details from the report!

1.3 DEGREE EMPHASIS

The report states that extreme weather conditions have reached dangerous peaks in 2024 and provides the following information: “This year’s record-breaking temperatures fueled relentless heat waves, droughts, forest fires, storms and floods that killed thousands of people and displaced millions from their homes. These extraordinary extreme weather conditions showed how dangerous life has become even with 1.3 degrees of human-caused warming. “The events underscore the importance of moving away from fossil fuels that warm the planet as quickly as possible.”

There may be an increase in deaths due to extreme heat in metropolitan cities during the summer months.

TEN THOUSANDS OF DEATHS

The report states that 26 weather events were examined in terms of climate change in 2024 and that the deaths of 3,700 people were recorded. A.However, it is emphasized in the report that the weather events examined were selected according to certain criteria, and that there may be tens of thousands of people who died from extreme weather events but were not recorded. For this reason, it is also underlined that losses from extreme weather events should be determined accurately.

THE DEADLIEST DISASTER

This situation, which is among the targets for 2025, is reflected in the report with the following statements: “Heat waves are the deadliest type of extreme weather events. However, the dangers of high temperatures are underreported. In April, a hospital in Mali saw a spike in excess deaths as temperatures soared to almost 50 degrees. “The incident, reported by local media, was a rare example of healthcare professionals taking immediate action about the dangers of extreme heat.”

The report includes urgent measures to be taken for 2025.

EMERGENCY WARNING REQUIREMENT

The report notes the following for early warning systems, which are among the urgent measures of 2025: “Weather disasters in 2024 showed the importance of early warning systems, which are one of the cheapest and most effective ways to minimize deaths. Warnings in systems need to be targeted, issued days before a dangerous weather event, and outline clear instructions on what people should do. Most extreme weather events can be predicted in developing countries. Every state needs to implement, test and continually improve early warning systems to ensure its citizens are not in danger.

THERE IS NO MORE TIME LEFT

The report mentions studies on fossil fuels and emphasizes that steps must be taken more urgently in this regard. The urgency of the situation is expressed as follows: “Last year at COP28, the world finally agreed to ‘move away from fossil fuels’. A rapid transition to renewable energy will help make the world a safer, healthier, wealthier and more stable place. “Ensuring that developing countries have the means to invest in adaptation will protect lives and livelihoods and create a more stable and fairer world.”
