Researchers from the US state of Texas, more than 411 thousand people over 50 years of age, 57 different studies have been examined. The results of the study showed that the use of regular technology reduced the risk of cognitive deterioration by 58 percent. In addition, the mental regression rate observed in these individuals over time increased between 26 and 34 percent lower. In each study, different digital habits were examined. Some focused on smartphone use and others on social media interactions. However, even when factors such as profession, education level and socioeconomic situation were controlled, it was seen that the protective effect of being in contact with technology has continued.
“We hear negative comments about how technologies affect us every day. The concepts such as digital dementia come up. However, data shows that such generalizations are not always correct,” said Michael Scullin, a psychologist and nervous scientist at the University of Baylor at Texas.
Neuropsychologist Jared Benge of the University of Texas, “Our data shows that elderly individuals connecting through technology and maintaining their mental activities can provide great benefits in terms of cognitive health,” he said.
According to experts, technology can stimulate the brain, especially through learning new devices and applications, and support mental health by reducing the feeling of loneliness through social media and video talks. It can also extend independent life expectancy with tools such as drug reminders and calendar applications.
