US President Trump’s pressure on Venezuela is increasing. The Foreign Office in Berlin now advises against traveling to the South American country.
In view of the worsening security situation in the Caribbean and a US warning for air traffic, the Federal Foreign Office urgently advises against traveling to Venezuela. The situation in the South American country is tense and could deteriorate further in the short term, according to the Foreign Office’s travel advice published on the Internet.
In addition to roadblocks and police checks, restrictions on mobile phone networks and the Internet are also possible, warns the Foreign Office. In addition, there are repeated arrests of German and other EU citizens in Venezuela on charges of supporting terrorism.
The US military is currently massing forces in the Caribbean. Numerous alleged drug boats have already been destroyed from the air off Latin America’s coasts. According to US information, more than 80 people were killed. After the US Federal Aviation Administration warned of potential dangers, several airlines suspended flights to and from Venezuela.
US President Donald Trump accuses Venezuela’s left-wing head of state Nicolás Maduro of being involved in drug trafficking. The USA used a similar reason to justify an invasion of Panama in 1989 and depose the then head of state Manuel Noriega.
Since Monday, the US government has classified the “Cartel de los Soles” – Cartel of the Suns – as a foreign terrorist organization. It is also suspected of drug trafficking. The US State Department accuses Maduro of leading it. The cartel is said to be a criminal network made up of officers from the Venezuelan armed forces. However, security experts disagree about whether it even exists as a hierarchically organized group.
Venezuela’s government called the group’s designation as a terrorist organization a “ridiculous farce” and denied the existence of such a cartel. The Venezuelan Foreign Ministry said it was an “infamous and despicable lie” aimed at justifying an operation against Venezuela. Officially, the US government cites the fight against drug cartels as the reason for its intervention. Venezuela accuses Washington of wanting to bring about regime change in the oil-rich country.
