In his statement to ITV News, Kyle stated that he would do whatever it takes to make the internet safe for children.
Stating that banning social media for people under the age of 16 is one of the options on the table in order to achieve this, Kyle said, “I do not want to ban things directly unless I have to, but I always prioritize people’s safety.” he said.
Kyle stated that the Office of Communications (Ofcom), which is responsible for enforcing the Online Security Act that will come into force next year, should take sharper decisions against technology companies.
“SECURITY IS OUR GOVERNMENT’S PRIORITY”
Kyle said that he is also in contact with politicians in Australia, where restricting social media for those under 16 is discussed, and added: “The safety of children in online environments is the priority of our government.” he said.
Kyle stated that the impact of smartphones on children will be evaluated through a research project. Meanwhile, The Molly Rose Foundation, founded by the family of Molly Rose, who committed suicide due to peer bullying on social media, also supported Kyle in a statement.
