Statement from the Ministry regarding layoffs at Polonez

The Ministry of Labor and Social Security announced that a fine of 2 million 9 thousand 560 liras was imposed on the employer who dismissed 145 workers at the Polonez factory operating in Istanbul on the grounds that they participated in union organization activities.

In a statement made by the Ministry, it was stated that the Guidance and Inspection Department affiliated with the Ministry prepared an inspection report regarding the dismissal of 13 workers who were dismissed from a company operating in Çatalca, Istanbul, due to their involvement in the organization activities of a union, and 132 workers who protested because they opposed the dismissal of these workers.

The statement included the following statements:

“As a result of the findings, it was requested that the company impose an administrative fine of 8,590 lira, totaling 1,211,190 lira, for 141 workers whose employment contracts were terminated due to union pressure at the workplace. The employer was also requested to impose an administrative fine of 5,506 lira, totaling 798,370 lira, due to the mass termination of 145 workers without notifying the Turkish Employment Agency. In addition, a criminal complaint was filed with the Office of the Chief Public Prosecutor regarding the employer who unlawfully prevented union activities at the workplace by dismissing unionized workers. As the ministry, we continue to fulfill our responsibilities for the protection of labor, union organization, and the rights and freedoms of employees.”
