Minister of Commerce Mahmut Gürcan made a statement on his social media account regarding the minimum spending limit set by restaurants in Istanbul as 1,500 lira on average.
In his post on his social media account, Minister Gürcan stated that they follow illegal activities meticulously and made the following statements:
“Recently, the news in the press and the notifications received by our Ministry regarding some restaurants and cafe establishments applying “spending limits” to their customers are being carefully examined. These practices are clearly contrary to both consumer rights and commercial ethics and legal regulations in force in our country, and an audit process has been urgently initiated by our Ministry regarding the issue. Such practices, which are clearly contrary to consumer rights and commercial ethics rules, are incompatible with the legal legislation regulating commercial activities, causing harm to consumers and negatively affecting the functioning of the market. Our Ministry fights determinedly and effectively against such unlawful practices. If such violations are detected, all necessary administrative sanctions will be applied to the businesses and criminal processes will be initiated, and no tolerance will be shown in this regard. Protecting the rights of our consumers is one of the main priorities of our Ministry. In this context, if our citizens encounter a similar situation, they should contact our Ministry, Provincial Trade Directorates or Alo 175 Consumer Information Line. All applications will be evaluated meticulously and necessary steps will be taken quickly. “As the Ministry of Commerce, we will resolutely pursue all practices that cause violation of consumer rights, disruption of commercial order and victimization of our citizens.”
