Drone strike: Spain sends warship to Cyprus

Kurdish forces are apparently preparing to fight Tehran. The first German evacuation flight to Frankfurt has taken off. All developments in the news blog.

After a drone strike on a British military base in Cyprus, Spain has announced that it will send a warship to the area. Spain will send the frigate “Cristóbal Colón” to provide “protection and air defense” for Cyprus and to support “any evacuation of civilians,” the Defense Ministry in Madrid said on Thursday. Accordingly, the ship is currently still in the Baltic Sea and is scheduled to reach the Greek island of Crete on March 10th.

On Monday night, the Akrotiri military base in Cyprus was attacked by an unmanned Iranian-made drone. The drone landed on the runway of the British air base in southern Cyprus, not far from the city of Limassol, which is popular with tourists. According to the British and Cypriot authorities, there were no casualties and only minor property damage.

Cyprus Interior Minister Nicholas Ioannides spoke in Brussels on Thursday of an “isolated incident”. However, Cyprus remains “vigilant” and is taking all necessary measures, Ioannides said.

According to the Sri Lankan government, another Iranian navy ship is near the island following the deadly attack on an Iranian frigate in the Indian Ocean. The warship is still in Sri Lanka’s so-called Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), i.e. outside the territorial waters, said cabinet spokesman Nalinda Jayatissa in parliament. The government is considering how to respond to the situation and is trying to find a solution to maintain regional security. There are said to be around 100 people on board.

According to the government, at least 80 crew members were found dead after an attack on the Iranian frigate “IRIS Dena”. Several were considered missing. According to consistent media reports, the ship was sunk by a US submarine with a torpedo. Both ships were said to be on their way back to Iran after taking part in a naval show in India.
