Donald Trump described the Ukrainian president a few days ago as a “dictator”. According to the US President, this should now come to Washington on Friday.
According to US President Donald Trump, Ukrainian President Wolodymyr Selenskyj wants to visit Washington on Friday. “I hear that he wants to come on Friday, that’s certainly okay for me if he wants,” said Trump in the White House.
Part of the talks should be an agreement on the United States’ access to minerals that are stored in Ukraine, including rare earths. The deal has been wrestled for weeks. Trump said Selenskyj wanted to personally sign the document together with him.
Trump did not give any details of a possible agreement. Media had previously reported that Ukraine and the United States had agreed on a framework.
Previously, Selenskyj had delayed the signing according to Washington, so US Finance Minister Scott Bessen had to travel back from Ukraine. Trump then directed public swear canons against the Ukrainian president, describing him as a “dictator”, among other things.
The exploitation of raw materials in Ukraine is considered strategically significant and economically lucrative. Experts point out that Ukraine will also need rare earths and other raw materials for its own reconstruction. A large part of the resources is also located in the Ukrainian areas occupied by Russia.
Trump sees US access to the mineral resources in return for US arms deliveries for Ukraine. Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) is one of the heads of state and government that at least openly express criticism of the American approach. At the beginning of February in connection with Trump’s statements, he had said that it “would be very selfish, very self -related” if one would use the resources of Ukraine to finance support in defense.
Trump also emphasized that there must be peace troops in Ukraine with which all sides could live. “Something is done that is acceptable for everyone,” said Trump. The day before, he had explained that Russia’s President Vladimir Putin had no problem with a European peacekeeping force in Ukraine. Russia had not confirmed this. Trump emphasized that the long -term support of Ukraine should feel the European neighbors.
