Trump speaks of a superweapon: “Discombobulator” is said to have paralyzed Maduro’s defense. Reports also suggest other reasons for the failure of Venezuela’s defenses.
According to US President Donald Trump, a secret jamming weapon is said to have made a decisive contribution to the success of the US military operation in Venezuela. He called her a “discombobulator,” according to an interview with the US newspaper “New York Post.” As a result, the Venezuelan equipment is said to have failed, allowing the authoritarian ruler Nicolás Maduro to be captured and taken out of the country.
Trump did not provide any further details about the jamming weapon he allegedly used. “I’m not allowed to talk about it,” he said. Because of this, the Venezuelan security forces were unable to respond to the US attack. “They never fired their missiles,” Trump said. “They had Russian and Chinese missiles, but they didn’t fire a single one. We came, they pressed the buttons, but nothing worked.”
On January 3, elite US forces attacked several targets in Venezuela, including the South American country’s main military base, Fuente Tiuna. Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores were arrested there. They are to be tried in New York for suspected drug offenses. According to Venezuelan authorities, at least 100 people were killed in the operation, including Venezuelan and Cuban security officials. According to Washington, no US soldiers were killed.
However, there are other explanations in the US press for the failure of Venezuela’s defense. According to a report in The New York Times, Venezuela’s state-of-the-art Russian air defense systems were not even connected to radar when the US helicopters showed up over Caracas to capture Maduro, according to US officials.
The report said Venezuela had had difficulty maintaining Russian equipment. The necessary spare parts and technical knowledge were often missing. In addition, before Maduro was captured, the US military is also said to have bombed locations where Russian ground-based Buk-M2 anti-aircraft systems were stationed or stored.
