The last time a Russian spoke at the G20 finance ministers’ meeting, there was an uproar. Now the Russian minister is even there in person.

For the first time since the start of the Ukraine war, a Russian finance minister is taking part in a meeting of the G20 group of leading industrialized and emerging countries. Finance Minister Anton Siluanow is currently in Asheville (North Carolina), where, at the invitation of the host Americans, discussions will be held about how the economy can get back on track.

Siluanow last joined the meeting of finance ministers via video in April 2022. Many Western ministers left the room in protest, including the then German finance minister Christian Lindner On the other hand, he remained and responded to the Russian’s speech with the group of G7 countries.

Unlike the Finance Minister, the Russian Foreign Minister takes Sergey Lavrov regularly took part in meetings in the G20 circle, most recently in February 2025 South Africa and 2024 in Brazil. The major summit of heads of state and government is prepared at the ministerial meetings.

At these summits, the Russians were not recently represented at the highest level, but only by Kremlin officials. president Vladimir Putin last took part in a summit in 2019. That could possibly change: US President Donald Trump Most recently expressed a fundamentally positive opinion about the Russian President’s possible participation in the summit in Miami this December. “If he came, it would probably be pretty helpful,” Trump said. “I believe that you should talk to everyone.”
