Russia has released Marc Fogel, which has been imprisoned since 2021. A “sign of good will” for Donald Trump.
Russia released the American teacher Marc Fogel from custody. This emerges from a message from the national security advisor Mike Waltz on Tuesday. According to this, a group led by US President Donald Trump, whose designated special officer for the Middle East Steve Witkoff and other advisors negotiated the release of Fogel.
The teacher from the US state of Pennsylvania was arrested in Moscow in August 2021 because he wanted to enter Russia with around 17 grams of cannabis in his luggage. The marijuana had previously been prescribed as a medication in the USA. In June 2022, a court sentenced him to 14 years in prison for drug smuggling.
Now Fogel is said to have left Russia on the air, as Waltz writes in his message. The US government regard the teacher’s release as a “sign of goodwill” by Russian President Vladimir Putin and also as a “signal that we will find our way to end of the brutal and terrible war in Ukraine in the right path “, says Waltz.
Fogel should be back in the United States by Tuesday evening (local time) and be united with his family, the statement continues.
