Russia reports damage to a submarine cable in the Baltic Sea. The damage could accidentally have been caused by a ship of the shadow fleet.

Russia is now also complaining about a damaged submarine cable through the Baltic Sea. The damage to the Baltika telecommunications cable was caused some time ago by “external influence”, said the Russian state company Rostelekom in Moscow. “Repair work is underway”, a message from the company was cited by the state news agency Ria Novosti. The cable damage has no effect on customers.

The Finnish coast guard announced on the short message service X that it monitored the repair of a torn Untersekabel by a Russian ship in the exclusive economic zone of Finland.

The work would take about a week, reported the Finnish radio broadcaster Yle, citing the Ministry of Economic Affairs in Helsinki. The damage to the cable that runs between St. Petersburg and Kaliningrad has been known to the responsible ministry since December 27. In the Finnish information there was still talk of a second, parallel Russian cable, which was also damaged.

According to Yle, the Russian telecom cable Baltika crosses the cables between Finland and Estonia damaged at Christmas on December 25th. The tanker “Eagle S”, which is counted towards the Russian shadow fleet, is suspected, which is still set on the instructions of the authorities off the coast of Finland. Due to several cable damage, behind which Russian sabotage is suspected, the NATO seas have strengthened their naval patrols.
