On the occasion of the 250th anniversary of American independence, members of the nationalist US group “Patriot Front” toured the US capital on Saturday WashingtonDC marches. Photos and videos on social media showed masked people with flags in front of Union Station. According to the Washington Post, several hundred uniformly dressed demonstrators marched toward the Capitol. They had white cloths pulled over their faces. Some carried shields like those used by police at demonstrations, but painted with the American flag.
Other participants in the protest also carried the Confederate flag, which is now often seen as a symbol of right-wing extremist and racist milieus. As the Washington Post reported, US flags were also seen upside down. This is intended to signal danger to life according to the US flag code, but is used by right-wing extremists as a symbol of protest against the state. Some protesters chanted “Take America back,” the newspaper said.
Group wants to create a white ethnostate
The “Patriot Front” was founded by Thomas Rousseau in August 2017 as a spinoff from the organization “Vanguard America” after racist riots in Charlottesville, Virginia. The group’s goal is to establish a white ethnostate. The organization often stands out for its tightly organized, sometimes unannounced marches. According to the human rights organization Anti-Defamation League (ADL) and the nonprofit Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), it is a right-wing extremist and neo-Nazi group.
At the March on Washington, Rousseau addressed this ideology in a speech. “The only way to secure our existence is to become everything we want to be,” said founder Thomas Rousseau at a rally in front of Union Station. “Our national independence has been conquered by a natural aristocracy of our people, the best of our Anglo-Saxon blood.”
According to police, the march remained peaceful. “The Metropolitan Police Department is following the incidents that occurred this morning in the Eastern Market district, which fell under the right to freedom of expression,” the local police authority said in response to a request from the German Press Agency. Right-wing groups like the “Patriot Front” repeatedly demonstrate in the USA. In January 2026, the right-wing extremist “Proud Boys” protested in front of the Capitol. In the USA, such demonstrations are usually covered by freedom of expression; the police usually only intervene if there are disputes.
