The jury decided that Apple should pay more than $5.7 billion in damages to San Diego-based Taction Technology. The decision was reported to be the highest damages awarded in a patent infringement case in the United States.

THE CASE WAS OPENED IN 2021

Taction filed the lawsuit against Apple in 2021. The company argued that the Taptic Engine used in iPhone and Apple Watch models violated its patented technology.

Taptic Engine creates the vibration feedback that users feel when touching the screen or performing operations on the device.

Apple, on the other hand, rejected Taction’s claims and argued that its own technology was different and the patents in question were invalid.

APPLE WILL APPEAL THE DECISION

Apple announced that it would appeal after the court decision.

The company stated that the Taptic Engine is fundamentally different from Taction’s technology, and its own tests reveal this. Apple also argued that it did not use Taction’s technology.

Taction’s lawyer, Lance Yang, stated that they were pleased with the jury’s decision and said that the decision confirmed the company’s patent rights.

THE DECISION WAS PREVIOUSLY MADE IN FAVOR OF APPLE

There is also a decision in favor of Apple in the history of the case. The federal court in San Diego ruled in 2023 that Apple did not infringe the patents.

However, the US Federal Court of Appeals overturned this decision last year, paving the way for the case to be retried. While the case was being heard again, this time the jury decided that Apple had infringed the patent.
