Russia supports ruler Assad in the Syrian civil war. To this end, Putin is probably restructuring his military apparatus.

After the surprising advance of rebels in Syria, Russia has fired General Sergei Kisel, who is responsible for the country, according to war bloggers. The Telegram channel Rybar, which is close to the Russian Ministry of Defense, and the blog Voenny Osvedomitel (Military Informant) reported on the 53-year-old’s dismissal on Sunday.

According to unconfirmed reports, Kisel will be replaced by Colonel General Alexander Chaiko. There was initially no statement from the Ministry of Defense. However, Russia also restructured its military structures in the Ukraine war without publicly announcing this.

Iran and Russia are key allies of Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad, while Turkey supports rebel groups. The Syrian army said on Saturday that dozens of its soldiers had been killed in a major attack by rebels who had entered the city of Aleppo. On Sunday, the army said it had recaptured several towns that had recently been overrun by rebels.
