Elementary damage is not equally likely everywhere – and not equally expensive everywhere. Where insurance cover is particularly worthwhile.

Floods, heavy rain, landslide – extreme weather events are increasing in Germany. Homeowners in particular should ask themselves: How big is the risk on site – and what does it cost to protect yourself? Because the standard building insurance often does not cover such damage. Depending on the region, the contributions for elementary damage insurance can vary greatly – from around 30 to more than 60 euros a month.

Elementary damage arises from natural events such as floods, avalanches, earthquakes or effects. As a rule, these are not covered in classic residential building insurance – this requires additional elementary damage insurance.

Depending on the location of the house, the risk of elementary damage can be significantly higher or lower. This also affects the amount of the insurance premium. The basis is the so-called Zürs system: it classifies each address in Germany into one of four hazard classes-from very little to very high risk.

The following overview shows exemplary average costs per state for a single -family house with 150 square meters of living space (built in 1990):

The costs relate to a combination of building and elementary damage insurance. Depending on the individual location, type or pre -insurance, you can vary slightly.

A high risk usually also means higher costs – but also regions with low risk are not automatically secure.

Experts therefore recommend that if you have a house, you should basically deal with the topic of elementary damage – and have your own address checked for the individual risk.
