The North Korean nuclear program continues to run in full swing. Now an American think tank has found a previously undiscovered rocket base.
North Korea seems to have a secret military base on the border with China – hidden in a mountain valley and 22 square kilometers. This is the result of a report by the US think tanks “Center for Strategic and International Studies” (CSIS). In it, the thought factory evaluated interviews, satellite images and public documents. Potentially firing from the base can be fired.
Construction work for the military base was probably already started in 2004. Even if work is still to take place on the site, the base has been operational since 2014. According to CSIS, large parts of the infrastructure are said to be underground. As the thought factory writes, the base should be able to house thousands of soldiers.
In addition to the “Sinpung dong” military base, North Korea is said to have up to 20 more bases. According to CSIS, most of them offer the prerequisites to store intercontinental missiles such as the North Korean Hwasong-15 or the Hawsong-18. Both rocket types can be equipped with nuclear explosive heads.
According to the thought factory, the hidden location speaks for the fact that intercontinental missiles are located in “Sinpung dong”. Accordingly, the base offers space for six to nine of the rockets. As a rule, the rockets are not armed nuclear. For upgrading the nuclear explosive heads there are probably extra systems in the thirty -minute radius of the base.
One of the authors of the report, Victor D. Cha, told the “Wall Street Journal”: “These are anything but good news. North Korea would not need much time to fire these rockets so that it would be difficult to destroy them before the start.”
Especially after the US attacks on the Iran nuclear program, North Korea has emphasized the relevance of its own nuclear systems. The state wants to expand underground facilities, rulers Kim also described the nuclear weapons as a precious defense of the country’s independence.
