The situation between Israel and Lebanon is becoming more and more tense with each passing day. An attack in Lebanon has now hit an important Palestinian commander.
A leading Palestinian commander was killed in an Israeli drone attack in Lebanon. The Palestinian Al-Aqsa Brigades confirmed the death of their commander, Khalil al-Makdah. He was killed in a “cowardly attack” by Israel in the Lebanese coastal city of Sidon, it said in a statement on Telegram. The Israeli military and the Lebanese army also confirmed the attack.
The state news agency NNA reported that the attack targeted a car. Sidon is located about 40 kilometers south of the capital Beirut.
The Al-Aqsa Brigades are the military arm of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’ Fatah movement. However, it is a loose network without a clear hierarchy, and local groups often act on their own. According to observers, the Palestinian Authority (PA), whose president is Abbas, is trying to distance itself from military actions by any group.
According to the Israeli military, Al-Makdah worked with the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) from Lebanon to obtain money and weapons for militant groups in the West Bank. He was also involved in planning attacks.
Since the beginning of the war in the Gaza Strip, there have been daily military confrontations between the Israeli army and the Hezbollah militia in Lebanon, as well as other groups in the border area between the countries. There have been deaths on both sides – most of them members of Hezbollah.
