In the city where the municipality was governed by MHP between 2019 and 2024, drinking water was sold for 1 TL for a long time. In addition, water fees were not collected from the public during Ramadan and religious holidays. When the CHP took over the management in the March 31 elections, the water price, which was 5 TL, was first increased to 11 TL and then to 19 TL. Finally, 1 cubic meter of water increased to 27.67.

“During the 2-year period, water prices have increased by more than 400 percent”

MHP Amasya Municipal Council Member Oğuz Kaan Sütoğlu said, “Water prices have increased by more than 400 percent in approximately 2 years. In the summer, electricity, natural gas and water prices are in competition. In the past, water prices used to comfort people. They were lower than other expenses. However, people were extremely affected by the increase in water prices.”

Pointing out that water is more expensive than imported natural gas, Sütoğlu said, “1 cubic meter of water is almost 50 percent more expensive than 1 cubic meter of natural gas. This water is a need met from Amasya’s own resources.”

“Are we running a bathhouse?”

Reminding that Amasya was the province where water was sold cheapest during the MHP period, shopkeeper Tuncay Çuhadar said, “It was sold for only 1 TL. Also, we have plenty of water this year. I wonder if Amasya Municipality’s income decreased and they increased the water prices. The water bill is much higher than natural gas and electricity.”
