In the race to develop artificial intelligence, the chips from the US company Nvidia are irreplaceable. US President Donald Trump therefore imposed trade restrictions on Nvidia’s best products in China. The new measure now indicates a continued tough course towards Beijing, although Trump recently tried to maintain a harmonious relationship with China’s head of state Xi Jinping.

Nvidia had recently tried to regain a foothold in the Chinese market. The company once did billions in business there until the disputes between Washington and Beijing brought business to a virtual standstill. For Nvidia, the world’s most valuable company, relations with China involve a lot of money: according to company boss Jensen Huang’s estimate, the company is missing out on revenue of around $50 billion this year alone.

New Jersey: curfew around deportation center

In response to renewed nighttime clashes outside a US deportation center in the US state of New Jersey, local authorities imposed a curfew around the building on Sunday. The mayor of the city of Newark, Ras Baraka, said a curfew would come into effect immediately within a 800 meter radius of the facility.

Between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. entry is prohibited until further notice “to ensure the safety and well-being of all residents,” the mayor explained. In front of the accommodation with a thousand beds, there had been clashes between police officers and critics of US President Donald Trump’s immigration policy several nights in a row.

The protests began after a hunger strike and work stoppages by migrants broke out at the ICE immigration detention center over conditions there. After there were largely peaceful demonstrations on Saturday, including by supporters of the US immigration agency ICE, some demonstrators tried to break through a police barrier. They then used tear gas. New Jersey’s Democratic governor, Mikie Sherrill, condemned the violence.

Mayor Mamdani boycotts Israel parade in New York – and receives sharp criticism

New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani became the first mayor in decades to boycott the annual Israel parade in the metropolis, drawing sharp criticism. The mayor has decided to “turn his back on tens of thousands of Jews and supporters of Israel,” said Israel’s UN ambassador, Danny Danon, in New York. Thousands of supporters marched through the streets of Manhattan at midday (US time) with Israeli flags, blue and white balloons and T-shirts that read “I love Israel.”
