A US federal judge in Minnesota is temporarily prohibiting federal emergency services from arresting refugees who have already been recognized as part of their intensified crackdown on migrants. Those already in custody must be released immediately, Judge John Tunheim said in an interim order.
“Refugees have a right to be in the United States, a right to work, a right to live peacefully – and especially a right not to be subjected to the terror of being detained or arrested in their homes or on the way to religious services or the supermarket without warrants or specific reasons,” the judge said. Those affected had already been checked “carefully and thoroughly” before they were recognized as refugees in the USA.
Tunheim added that the responsible immigration authority USCIS will not be prevented from re-examining the status of the refugees concerned. She must do this “but without arrests or arrests.”
