The new agreement signed by US President Donald Trump with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen opened the door to a new era in Washington’s military presence in Greenland. At the center of the agreement is the expansion of the existing Pituffik Cosmodrome. However, the new opportunity Washington has gained is not limited to this. Narsarsuaq in the south and Mestersvig in the east may also become new American defense areas. Thus, the US military presence in Greenland will expand from a single base to different parts of the island.

TWO NEW DEFENSE POINTS

Narsarsuaq hosted one of the US’s important air bases during the Cold War. Mestersvig is a remote military point with a strategic location in the east of Greenland. The new regulation paves the way for both regions to become part of American military planning again.

THE DOOR IS OPEN FOR MORE BASES

One of the most striking provisions of the agreement is that the USA can request new defense areas in other parts of Greenland in the future. American military aircraft flying over the island, landing at different points, and warships using Greenlandic waters are also important parts of the new security architecture. Greenland will also play a critical role in the Golden Dome missile defense system developed by the Trump administration. Pituffik is already one of the most important northern points of the US missile early warning and space surveillance network. The new agreement paves the way for further expansion of this infrastructure.

THE DOOR IS CLOSING TO RUSSIA AND CHINA

Another important pillar of the agreement is limiting the influence of Russia and China in Greenland. While non-NATO countries are prevented from establishing military facilities on the island, critical infrastructure, mining and strategic resource investments are also subject to security control. It is considered that this regulation particularly targets China’s rare earth elements and infrastructure investments.

UNMANNED MILITARY FACILITIES ARE ALSO ON THE AGENDA

An accelerated approval mechanism is also being created for the USA to establish unmanned military facilities such as radar, sensors, communication and early warning systems. This situation allows Washington to establish not only a base but also a large electronic surveillance network that can spread to different points of Greenland.

THE AGREEMENT HAS NO END DATE

One of the most striking aspects of the new regulation is that there is no time limit. Even if Greenland declares its independence in the future, the way is kept open for the current defense order to continue. According to experts, in the new power struggle in the Arctic, Greenland is becoming one of the most critical advanced defense centers of the USA against Russia and China.
