ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE COMES TO THE AGENDA AT COP31
Türkiye is working on the 2026 Antalya Artificial Intelligence Commitment ahead of COP31 (United Nations Climate Change Conference) to be held in Antalya in November 2026. According to the Climate Desk’s study, the agenda includes transparency in the energy consumption of data centers, responsible use of artificial intelligence and investment in artificial intelligence-supported clean technologies.

ELECTRICITY PRODUCTION WILL MORE THAN DOUBLE
According to the IEA, data centers consumed 415 TWh of electricity in 2024, accounting for 1.5 percent of global consumption. This amount is expected to more than double by 2030, reaching approximately 945 TWh. One of the most important reasons for the increase is artificial intelligence.

EMISSIONS MAY INCREASE 13 TIMES
In the research published in ‘npj Climate Action’ in August 2026, 64 scenarios on the subject were examined. It was calculated that the emissions that could be caused by artificial intelligence facilitating fossil fuel production could reach 0.6-2.4 gigatons of carbon dioxide per year, and 3.3-13.3 times the direct emissions of data centers.

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IN OIL AND GAS
According to data provided by the Climate Desk, artificial intelligence is used to explore, extract and provide more production from existing wells in oil and gas. 44 percent of oil and gas exploration and production companies use artificial intelligence in the exploration phase; Goldman Sachs estimates that the technology could increase US shale gas reserves by 8-20 percent.
