Netanyahu immediately launches “intense attacks” on Gaza. Previously there was said to have been a breach of the ceasefire by Hamas.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has ordered the army to immediately carry out “intense attacks” in the Gaza Strip. Netanyahu’s office announced this after a security consultation with the head of government. Eyewitnesses report Israeli warplanes attacking Gaza City. The city is located in the north of the Gaza Strip.
According to a media report, a firefight had previously broken out in the southern Gaza Strip despite the ceasefire. The Israeli army radio reported that armed members of the terrorist organization Hamas had shot at Israeli soldiers. According to Palestinian eyewitnesses, there was then artillery shelling of several areas in the Rafah area. All information cannot currently be independently verified.
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz has threatened Hamas. The terrorist organization will pay a “heavy price for the attack on Israeli soldiers in Gaza and for violating the agreement on the return of the killed hostages,” Katz said, according to his office. With the attack, Hamas crossed a “red line.” The Israeli army will react to this with great severity. Hamas will pay double or triple.
There have been repeated deadly incidents since a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas began on October 10 as part of US President Donald Trump’s peace plan. According to the Hamas-controlled health authority, more than 90 Palestinians have already been killed. Just over a week ago, two Israeli soldiers were killed in a rocket-propelled grenade attack.
After handing over the remains of an already buried hostage, Hamas announced that it would hand over another body. This should be handed over at 8 p.m. local time (7 p.m. CET), according to a message from Hamas’ military wing, the Qassam Brigades, on Telegram. The body was found in a tunnel.
To date, the remains of hostages have always been handed over by representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). On Monday evening, Hamas handed over the remains again. However, forensic investigations in Israel revealed that these belonged to an Israeli whose body the army had already brought to Israel in autumn 2023. This sparked great anger and indignation in Israel and was the reason for Netanyahu’s security consultation to discuss how to proceed.
As part of US President Donald Trump’s peace plan, Hamas would have had to hand over a total of 28 bodies of Israeli hostages more than two weeks ago. However, the terrorist organization has not yet returned 13 bodies and explains this due to the difficult conditions on site. According to media reports, Israel is now considering, among other things, expanding the area it still controls in the coastal strip in response to the delay.
