After Russia and China damaged communications and military cables in the Baltic Sea for years, European members of NATO decided to establish a new naval force to protect submarine cables from the Baltic region to the Mediterranean. The United States will also support the force led by France, Germany, England and Italy. In the plan, Türkiye was determined as the critical country in the Mediterranean.

European members of NATO are creating a new naval force to protect their undersea communications and military cables from Russian and Chinese attacks.

WAR UNDER THE SEA

After Russia’s specially trained submarine teams targeted NATO military communication cables in the Baltic Sea for two years, US-led submarine teams began to go on regular submarine protection missions. B.sixty It turned out that China was also involved in the shadow war going on underwater in the Sea. NATO sources claim that in October 2023, the polar research ship ‘NewNew Polar Bear’ registered to China damaged two large military data cables and natural gas lines in the Baltic Sea. Sources state that in December, the Chinese container ship named ‘Yi Peng 3’ cut two main communication cables used for communication between Germany, Finland, Liltway and Sweden. What is happening pushes Europe to take drastic measures.

4 COUNTRIES BECAME THE PIONEERS

According to the news of the US-based Defense News defense publication, based on NATO sources, European members of NATO decided to establish a new naval force, consisting mainly of unmanned marine vehicles (UAV) and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), especially in the face of the events in the Baltic Sea. Unmanned submarines will also be included in the new Europe-based naval force to be established under the leadership of 4 countries. It is planned to establish minefields on the Baltic Sea floor that are mobile and do not appear fixed on maps. It is also planned that the naval force to be established within the framework of the concept will protect all of Europe’s submarine cables up to the Eastern Mediterranean from hostile elements. The European Defense Agency also supports the planning. France is ready to participate in the project with many UAVs and drones. France also offers the option of placing submarine cables at deeper points around Europe, with its extensive naval power for the project. France is also developing an IDA called ‘Manta’ that can operate at a depth of 6 thousand meters.

It is stated that Turkey is a key country for the protection of Europe’s cables, which play a major role in military and public communications.

GERMANY UNDERTAKED THE TECHNOLOGY

The Italian Navy is working in partnership with Sparkle, which has a 600 thousand kilometer submarine cable network, for the security of the submarine area in the Mediterranean. While it is stated that the new submarines produced in Italy have started to be produced as drone platforms, Rome has already developed an automatic identification system that shows which ships pass over which cables. While Britain offers its expertise in submarine warfare to Europe, it has also announced that it can use “special teams to carry out submarine operations on enemy coasts” for the security of Europe. London also plans to produce a submarine warfare platform called ‘Cetus’. The physical condition of the cables, the quality of information and data flow and Germany is undertaking the high-technology ‘installing and producing sensors’ part of the project.

Türkiye A STRATEGIC COUNTRY

The USA provides both civilian and military support to the project. The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) produces an updated map of the sea areas and bottoms surrounding the European continent. The USA has also included ‘Task Force 59’, which operates in the Middle East and is considered the first unmanned and artificially intelligent naval force of the US Navy, in the project. The task force, publicly known as the “digital navy”, includes many UAVs and UAVs. NATO sources also underline that Türkiye is the critical country for the security of communications and military cables in the east of the Mediterranean.
