NATO deterrent on the eastern flank: new headquarters

Is Europe doing enough for its military security? Germany and the Netherlands want to set an example for more independent defense in the Baltics.

The German-Dutch Corps and its staff took over leadership of the alliance’s land forces, the Estonia and Latvia to defend against threats or a military attack.
“This shows that we are ready to take on greater responsibility for Europe’s security,” said the Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) at the handover of command in the Estonian-Latvian border town of Valga. The corps stands for military integration in Europe. The German-Dutch corps was established in 1995 and is located in Muenster. The command rotates between the two countries on a regular basis. In addition to the Netherlands and Germany, 14 other NATO allies currently provide personnel. The headquarters can command an international force of around 50,000 soldiers and has led several international operations in the past.
Close cooperation with Germany
Germany has increased its military involvement in the Baltics after Russia’s attack on the Ukraine significantly expanded. The most intensive collaboration occurs with Lithuaniawhere the Bundeswehr will station a combat-ready brigade with a total strength of up to 5,000 soldiers by 2027.
But cooperation is also close with Estonia and Latvia. She regularly takes over air force NATO airspace surveillance over the Baltics and is moving fighter jets and personnel to bases in the region.
